Histology project (Spring, 2008)---20pt
Due Thursday April 17, 2008
Format: Maximum 4 pages (double or single space okay), plus attach the 1st page of the article.
Assignment: This assignment is to help you apply your histology knowledge to ongoing research in the primary literature that involves histology interpretation and techniques. You will find an article in the original research literature (i.e. not a review article) which contains histology. Preferably you should select an article that is fairly recent (i.e. in the last couple of years is best). {Remember, histology is TISSUE, so do not select papers that exclusively involve experiments using isolated cell culture, even though the paper might refer to this process as ‘tissue culture’. Very few studies actually dissect whole multi-cellular tissues and place them in culture.}
1) Select one research article containing histology micrographs for your project. Any journal is acceptable. Try Cell & Tissue Research, J. Cell Biology, Cell, Science, or any specialty journal in an area that you are interested in (cardiology, dental, etc.)
2) Select 1 or 2 figures (no more). A figure consists of one or more smaller photographs. A figure may even contain up to 15 or more small photographs.
3) Label the figure with arrows and letters or words. Label everything you possibly can recognize. You do not need to label each structure repeatedly in the smaller photos if you have already labeled a structure once. You may label using a program such as photoshop, word or other graphics programs, or do your labeling by hand with a felt pen. Print out the figure.
4) Provide the legend from the article. Then write your own written legend to the figure, which explains the things you see and are labeled. Provide a key if necessary (i.e. a = nucleus, b=microvilli).
5) Write a maximum one page summary of the histology which was presented in the paper. Briefly state the methods used, the results, etc.
6) Write a maximum half-page summary of the importance of those results to the literature or the field of research. You may use references if you like.
7) Attach the first page of the full article. This page should contain the abstract and the title, authors, institutions. It also contains the first part of the introduction. Please do not just submit an abstract.
